Ten Heavenly Stems Explained: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding and More

The Ten Heavenly Stems are 甲 Jia, 乙 Yi, 丙 Bing, 丁 Ding, 戊 Wu, 己 Ji, 庚 Geng, 辛 Xin, 壬 Ren, and 癸 Gui. They are the visible elemental faces of a Bazi chart.

Stems Carry Element And Polarity

Each stem belongs to one of the Five Elements and has a yin or yang quality. Jia is Yang Wood, Yi is Yin Wood, Bing is Yang Fire, and Ding is Yin Fire.

This is why two people can both have Wood themes but express them differently: one may be upright and direct like Jia, another flexible and relational like Yi.

Stems As Archetypes

The stems are not personality boxes. They are symbolic archetypes that help describe how energy moves.

Hidden Stems uses stem cards to help English-speaking users remember the difference between the ten symbols without losing the Chinese characters.
